“What does it mean to be happy and to live a good life?” “How can we live a life that is free from suffering, in ways that support our well-being, the well-being of those around us and the wider world?” As more people live longer, in better health with greater economic security, these have become pressing questions for our contemporary world. They have been a driving force for the development of mindfulness-based programs in the last forty years.
Based on the 2019 book Mindfulness. Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Psychology, this masterclass steps back to take an overview of the exponentially growing field of mindfulness and its applications. It suggests that when ancient wisdom and modern psychology come together they are no longer a set of ideas or practices but an illumination that guides us to be more present in our lives, with ourselves and with others, with clarity, kindness and ease.
The course fee for this masterclass is £65 and all delegates will receive a hardback copy of the book.
Learning and teaching methods
The masterclass will include teaching, opportunities for question and answer, small group work and mindfulness practice.
The masterclass will provide answers to these questions:
- What is mindfulness?
- How can Buddhist and modern psychology together help us understand how distress and suffering are created and recreated? How can they help us understand how joy and well-being are created and sustained?
- How does mindfulness support the path from suffering to flourishing? Is mindfulness a technique or a way of being in the world – or both? How does it enable transformation?
- What are the important questions around ethics and integrity for mindfulness practitioners, teachers and the wider field? What supports this inquiry?
- What does it mean to become embodied? What are the challenges and what supports embodiment?
Who is it for?
The masterclass is primarily for anyone teaching mindfulness-based programs. However, it will also be of interest to those who are learning mindfulness who wish to deepen their understanding.
