Research and Evaluation in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy

29th September 2019

What is this Masterclass about?

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is an evidence-based program. Even if you are not a researcher, it’s important to understand the published research on MBCT so that you can communicate about it in a way that is accurate and informative for people who may be interested in taking an MBCT course or just want to know more about it. If you teach MBCT courses, it can also be helpful and interesting to collect data from your participants, even if you have no intention of publishing it. This helps us know if we are having the effects we intend, and, as importantly, can ensure we are doing no harm. Simple questionnaires or survey questions can provide important information about how participants are doing.

Half of this day will provide an informative summary of the evidence base for MBCT. Topics include: How effective is MBCT? For whom is it helpful? How does it work? Does it matter how much people practice? Are self-help and online programs effective? Can we measure people’s mindfulness skills? What are the effects of mindfulness training on compassion and kindness? Ruth will also implicitly communicate the important lesson of how we as MBCT teachers can communicate the evidence base in an effective and balanced way.

Half of this day will focus on how to evaluate the courses you teach. Cultivating an attitude of curiosity about how your participants are doing is an important foundation for thinking more specifically about what you want to know. We’ll start with framing good evaluation questions. For example, did participants experience a decrease in their stress or other symptoms? Has their quality of life improved? Did they become more mindful and compassionate? How satisfied were they with the course? Did they have any difficulties, and if so, how did they manage them? This part of the day will help you think about what you want to know about the effects of your courses and how to invite your participants to provide you with answers. It will review a range of approaches to evaluation and resource you with the skills and tools to evaluate your work.

Who is it for?
