My mindfulness journey began with Nature, first as a child, then continuing into a scientific career exploring the edges of what we humans understand, with curiosity and beginners mind. Nature continued its call – with thousands of hours spent traveling in mountainous wilderness areas, opening to a sense of peacefulness, well-being and belonging transcending words and thoughts. Such experiences led me to become certified in Forest Therapy (Forest Therapy School), guiding and instructing immersive courses in Nature. My academic background is in Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology (PhD Harvard). In both research and teaching my interests have been aimed at how genetic mechanisms can result in health or disease. In particular, how do nervous systems function to allow animals to experience the world around them, and how can these processes go wrong? Inevitably for me, this led to considering the nature of the mind and what we call consciousness, as well as the integral component, the body. I teach Introduction to Mindfulness, and for interested participants, a follow-on day of practice in Nature. I began my own formal mindfulness journey in 2016 and appreciate its surprises and benefits in my own day-to-day life and well-being.
